In this video, two people discussing a Yoplait commercial that was pulled because the National Eating Disorder Organization stated that it induced eating disorders.
The woman that is discussing the ad says, "That internal conversation she had with herself, is a normal one." This comment reminded me of a time I was hanging out with a sorority sister and she said, "Well we all have had an eating disorder at one point, it is normal." Is this normal behavior for women and men in the United States? Or is this view point formed because we are rationalizing our thoughts with ads like these? Do you think this ad would trigger an eating disorder? Perpetuating eating disorders? The man in the clip said commercials for beer don't trigger alcoholism. Is it the same thing? Also, he commented on the woman with the internal dialogue "having wider hips," indicating she didn't fit in with social norms of what "skinny" is, and yet he said the other woman was "too thin." So what is 'normal'? I think these are questions to ask ourselves when we see ads like these or hear dialogue about issues like these.
I would love to hear your thoughts! :)
